The Duggan Dental Studies

Fundamental Restorative Techniques in house and/ Online Course

The World's First hands-on course that includes on-line learning!

This is the first online-hands-on course that we have assembled and it is possibly unique in the dental educational community.  It offers as much of a learning experience as possible, while not leaving the comfort of your own home! At DDS we have always pushed back the frontiers to provide the best possible programs for our students.  We have over 3500 dentists in California who have experienced our hands-on programs, which have always offered much more than competing courses for much less expense.  For our FRT hands-on program at our offices, we continue to offer a uniquely effective experience,  for the intense and concentrated continuous nine-day course, and for the weekend and 18 day programs.

We recorded a complete FRT program, not only the lecture presentations, but also the demonstrations and many hours of working with students on various dental preparations.  For the close-up work, Dr. Duggan recorded using the Point-of-view camera system that was developed by him.  It shows students in the class exactly what he sees while working on a preparation, even through the mirror – and it can do the same for you!

This online program is designed to better prepare students for our in-house course and offers guidance after the course while preparing at home.  There are five Segments to the program, where each Segment comprises both Learning and Practical parts.  For example, during Segment I, the Orientation and Class II Segment, many video clips will be studied where Dr. Duggan describes aspects of the course and of competitive dental exams, and then the fundamental principles of design AND execution of class II preparations, both for amalgam and composite.  He then demonstrates the preparations with the POV camera, and then spends considerable time working on preparations with each student in the class, all of it recorded.  The Practical part of Segment I is where YOU do preparations at home, following Dr. Duggan’s guidelines.  You are given a specific assignment of seven or eight preparations to do, preferably using a manikin.

To restate the homework philosophy more completely:  every preparation you send in would, ideally, be one where you see nothing wrong.  If you have reached the point where your hands can do what your head directs, then we can see what is “in your head”, and if there are errors in understanding the principles and concepts.  These errors are relatively easy to correct.  It should take at least five or ten preparations on ONE tooth before you start to be able to control the handpiece, bur, and VIEW well enough to be satisfied with your work.  The view is especially important, and is emphasized throughout the program and in the manual as well.  For every step of every prep there is a specific direction that you should look for optimal results.  This is not (Dr. Duggan concludes after working with thousands of students) common sense.  You must understand the principle behind viewing direction and logically decide what makes the most sense and then see good results.  After a while it will become habit on the manikin, and also it will be automatic in patients as the most valuable result!

In order to perform work at home (or in a friends dental office) you should have something to hold the typodont so you can hold the handpiece and mirror.  Most entrance exams and ALL patients are like this!  A complete manikin with universal joint, fixation rods and head cost more than $500 – but you may be able to set something up from the hardware store for considerably less, if you put some work into it.  We will help guide you on this if you desire.  Also, we have available relatively low cost silent compressors, even useful in apartments.  If you have a house, you can buy a noisy compressor but still need a pedal and hoses.  And, your typodont should be reasonably well equilibrated – proximal and occlusal contacts adjusted where necessary.  When you sign up for the course – one of the first modules you watch will show Dr. Duggan explaining equilibration methods you can use – for both Kilgore and Columbia typodonts.

When you want to practice with this FRT program before you arrive, you will need to have enough typodont teeth and burs and instruments to allow practicing adequately on all of the preparations assigned.  Every preparation for homework will require at least 5 and maybe 10 attempts before you get to the point where it should be sent in.  Can you do the preparation 10 times and learn to make one that you think is perfect?  Maybe not, but it should improve with every attempt and the result after 5 or 10 preparations should be satisfactory to you, at least.  Order forms are provided upon request so that you can specify exactly what you want. You will need to be familiar with the Columbia 860 typodont, the Kilgore S-200 typodont, or both, depending on what examinations you expect to take.  Generally, we start with the Columbia, since most schools use this, but, after you complete the program, it may be advisable to repeat many preparations on the Kilgore, after we go over what aspects of this typodont make it more difficult to achieve ideal preparations.
